The Order Not to Disturb

Chapter 01 - The Order Not to Disturb

Adrian Hawthorne returned to his estate six hours earlier than expected.

His jet had left Geneva before dawn after the final investor meeting collapsed. By noon, rain was sweeping across Hawthorne Manor, turning the long windows gray and muting the sound of the city beyond the gates.

No one waited in the entrance hall.

That alone felt wrong.

For fifteen years, Mrs. Elena Alvarez, the head housekeeper, had known Adrian’s schedule more accurately than his executive assistants. Yet when he found her in the breakfast room, she was wiping the same section of marble again and again without looking up.

“Where is Vanessa?” Adrian asked.

Elena’s hand stopped.

“She gave strict orders not to be disturbed.”

There was something in the way she said it—not disapproval, not gossip, but fear trained into politeness.

Adrian removed his wet coat.

“Is she ill?”

“No, sir.”

“Is Dr. Reed with her?”

Elena’s eyes moved toward the ceiling before she could stop them.

Julian Reed was Adrian’s private physician, a thirty-two-year-old specialist Vanessa had recommended after Adrian’s unexplained fainting episodes began. Julian was also the man preparing the medical report that would allow Vanessa to represent Adrian at the emergency board meeting the following morning.

Adrian started toward the staircase.

Elena caught his sleeve.

“Sir, please.”

A shout came from the master bedroom above.

Then the sharp crack of a slap.

Adrian took the stairs two at a time.

Inside the bedroom, Vanessa stood near the carved four-poster bed wearing a blue silk blouse and black trousers. Her face was twisted with fury.

Before her stood Clara Bennett, a twenty-four-year-old junior housemaid, one hand pressed against her reddening cheek.

“You were told not to enter!” Vanessa shouted.

“I heard someone call for help.”

“You heard nothing.”

Vanessa lifted her hand again.

Clara’s frightened expression changed.

Her eyes moved past Vanessa toward the open door.

Then, unexpectedly, she smiled.

Not because the slap had not hurt.

Because Adrian was standing there.

Clara raised one trembling finger and pointed toward the bed.

A young man sat up beneath the white sheets.

He was shirtless.

Julian Reed stared at Adrian with the stunned face of a man who had believed every door in the house was locked.

Vanessa turned slowly.

For one long second, no one spoke.

Adrian looked from his wife to his physician, then to the woman they had just struck for seeing too much.

“What,” he asked quietly, “was I not supposed to disturb?”
