Beneath the Room of Applause

Chapter 11 - Beneath the Room of Applause
Rain returned after midnight.
Clara, Maya, and Elena entered Hawthorne Manor through the laundry tunnel while Adrian met reporters outside the front gate, drawing security attention.
The media studio glowed with artificial daylight. On the wall hung photographs of Vanessa visiting hospitals, Victor shaking hands with workers, and Adrian receiving humanitarian awards.
Elena found the hidden floor latch beneath the raised platform.
A narrow stairway led into darkness.
The vault smelled of paper and metal. Shelves held ledgers dating back thirty years, many left untouched because the company had digitized its records.
Thomas Bennett had hidden a black binder inside a ventilation cavity.
The Hawthorne Ledger contained every suspicious transfer he found: payments to Julian, shell companies controlled by Victor, medical facilities connected to Vanessa, and private security expenses before Thomas’s crash.
At the back was a notarized statement.
Thomas wrote that Adrian’s medication had been replaced and that he had personally confronted Victor. He planned to bring the evidence to federal investigators the following morning.
He never arrived.
Maya found another file.
It contained amendments to Adrian’s will, each version transferring more authority to Vanessa and Victor. Some signatures were forged. Others were genuine but dated during hospital stays when Adrian was heavily sedated.
Clara photographed every page.
Then the vault door closed above them.
Victor’s voice came through the intercom.
“Thomas always did underestimate the cameras.”
Security had detected the platform movement.
Victor ordered them to leave the binder and come upstairs.
Maya whispered, “He cannot know we copied it.”
Clara saw an old pneumatic document tube connecting the vault to the former accounting office.
She placed the memory cards and Thomas’s statement inside a metal capsule and pulled the release lever.
The capsule shot through the wall.
Elena remembered where the tube ended: behind a decorative panel in the public reception hall.
Adrian was outside with thirty reporters.
Maya called him through the emergency line.
“Break the bronze hawk.”
At the front gate, Adrian turned toward the company emblem mounted inside the reception hall.
He picked up a stone planter and smashed the glass door.
Security rushed toward him.
Cameras recorded everything.
Adrian struck the bronze hawk from the wall.

The metal capsule rolled across the marble at his feet.
The evidence had escaped before they did.
