The House That Had Chosen a Side

Chapter 04 - The House That Had Chosen a Side

Marcus Shaw refused to arrest Clara without police, but he ordered her confined to the staff sitting room.

Adrian’s phone, laptop, and car keys were removed under what Vanessa called a “temporary safety protocol.”

Every action had a document behind it.

Julian’s medical declaration allowed Vanessa to restrict Adrian’s movement if he presented a danger to himself or others. The forged power of attorney allowed her to communicate with the board. A private judge had approved an emergency review based on reports submitted over the previous six months.

Adrian had been declared unstable one paragraph at a time.

Elena found him in the library after security released him from the bedroom.

“I should have told you,” she whispered.

“Yes.”

The blunt answer made her flinch.

Adrian softened his voice.

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because Mrs. Hawthorne knew my son’s immigration case was unresolved. She said one telephone call could send him away.”

Adrian looked at the shelves built by his grandfather, the portraits of men who believed ownership meant protection.

In his own house, employees had been threatened while he praised himself for treating them like family.

“Where is Clara?”

“Staff room. Marcus posted a guard.”

“Can you reach her?”

Elena nodded.

Adrian handed her a small key hidden inside his signet ring.

“Bring her to the old wine passage.”

The passage connected the kitchen cellar to the library and had been sealed after renovations. Thomas Bennett once used it to move company records during a flood.

Meanwhile, Vanessa entered the study and called the board.

She announced that Adrian had suffered a paranoid episode after returning from Geneva. She claimed he accused Julian of an affair, threatened staff, and interfered with a theft investigation.

The directors agreed to move the emergency vote forward to midnight.

If approved, Vanessa would become acting chair of Hawthorne Global.

At ten thirty, Adrian met Clara and Elena inside the wine passage.

Clara’s cheek had darkened.

“I am sorry,” Adrian said.

“For what?”

“For making a house where she believed she could do that to you.”

Clara studied him carefully.

Most rich men apologized for scenes, not systems.

She removed a small object from inside her shoe.

It was a digital memory card.

“I dropped my phone when she hit me,” Clara said. “But the bedroom clock has a camera. Your daughter installed it last Christmas after jewelry went missing.”

Adrian stared.

His daughter, Maya, had not spoken to him in eleven months. Vanessa had convinced him Maya’s accusations were the result of jealousy and addiction.

Clara held up the card.

“The clock recorded everything.”

May you like

Footsteps sounded above them.

Someone had discovered the empty staff room.
