Vanessa on the Witness Stand

Chapter 16 - Vanessa on the Witness Stand
Vanessa rejected every plea agreement.
She entered court wearing white and presented herself as a wife trapped by a controlling billionaire and manipulated by two criminal men.
Her lawyer argued that Julian managed the medication and Victor managed the finances. Vanessa’s affair, however immoral, did not prove conspiracy.
Then Clara testified.
She described the strict order not to disturb, the bedroom, the slap, the planted bracelet, and the leather folder beneath the bed.
Vanessa’s attorney tried to shame her.
“You entered your employer’s private bedroom without consent?”
“I entered after hearing someone call for help.”
“No recording captures that call.”
“No. It captures what happened after.”
“You smiled after Mrs. Hawthorne struck you, did you not?”
The courtroom screens showed Clara’s expression changing from tears to a smile.
“Yes.”
“Why would a frightened victim smile?”
“Because her husband was standing behind her.”
A quiet reaction moved through the gallery.
Clara looked at Vanessa.
“For eighteen months, she acted as if the truth belonged to whoever had more power. That was the first second I knew she could not control everyone in the room.”
Maya testified about the stolen trust assets and Vanessa’s efforts to label her unstable.
Elena testified about threats against her son.
Adrian testified last.
Vanessa’s lawyer asked whether he wanted revenge for public humiliation.
“Yes,” Adrian said.
The honesty surprised everyone.
“I wanted revenge the day I opened that bedroom door. But wanting it is why I should not decide her punishment. Evidence should.”
The prosecution played Julian’s confession and Victor’s financial records.
Vanessa finally took the stand.
Under cross-examination, she denied planning Adrian’s death.
The prosecutor showed her a message to Julian:
After the gala, the old man becomes a portrait.
Vanessa claimed it was a joke.
Then the prosecutor displayed search records from her tablet:
How long does sedative remain after cremation?
The room went still.
Vanessa looked toward Adrian.

For years, she had survived by controlling how men interpreted her face.
This time, no expression could explain the words away.
