The Founder’s Gala Without a Founder

Chapter 14 - The Founder’s Gala Without a Founder

The gala moved to Hawthorne Global’s downtown atrium.

Victor Lane appeared by encrypted video from an unknown location. He claimed Adrian’s supporters had started the fire to destroy evidence unfavorable to them.

The board prepared to confirm Victor as permanent chairman.

Thousands of employees watched through internal broadcast channels.

Adrian had been invited only as a nonvoting founder.

He entered with Maya, Clara, Elena, and Nora Price.

Clara wore a dark suit instead of her housekeeping uniform. Reporters called her the maid who exposed a billionaire conspiracy.

She corrected them.

“I was a housemaid. I am also Thomas Bennett’s daughter. Neither fact cancels the other.”

Victor began the meeting.

He spoke about continuity, jobs, and the danger of allowing private scandal to destroy a public company.

Adrian requested five minutes.

Victor refused.

Employee representatives began striking the atrium tables with pens.

The sound spread.

Five minutes, they chanted.

The board yielded.

Adrian stepped onto the stage.

“I spent years believing leadership meant being the person with the final answer. It made me easy to deceive because everyone learned to bring me answers I preferred.”

He displayed the Hawthorne Ledger, toxicology results, bedroom footage, and evidence from the fire.

Then Maya revealed the most important document found in the vault.

The original company charter contained an integrity clause written by Adrian’s mother. If executives used medical fraud or coercion to obtain control, voting authority transferred temporarily to an employee and beneficiary council.

Victor’s appointment was invalid.

His video feed remained silent.

The council voted to remove him.

At that moment, federal agents traced the feed to Hawthorne Global’s own private aircraft hangar.

Victor had never left the city.

Cameras showed his arrest live.

As officers approached, Victor tried to board a jet with two suitcases of cash and the original trust seal.

The company employees watched him being led away.

No applause followed.

The silence was more powerful.

Adrian turned toward Clara.

“The council needs an interim financial investigator.”

She shook her head.

“I am not qualified because my father was right.”

“No,” Maya said. “You are qualified because you spent eighteen months verifying him.”

Clara accepted a temporary role under independent supervision.

For the first time, the person who had cleaned the boardroom would enter it with a vote.
