The Vote at Midnight

Chapter 06 - The Vote at Midnight

The board meeting began by encrypted video.

Adrian was allowed to appear from his study with Marcus standing behind him. Vanessa sat beside Julian at the conference table as if physician and caregiver were their only relationship.

The directors saw exactly what Vanessa wanted them to see: an angry husband, a calm wife, and a doctor prepared to discuss neurological decline.

Julian described memory lapses, paranoia, and impulsive behavior.

“Mr. Hawthorne’s condition has progressed rapidly,” he said. “He may interpret ordinary events as betrayal.”

Adrian almost admired the construction. If he accused Julian of lying, it became another symptom.

Vanessa requested emergency control for ninety days.

Before the vote, Maya joined the call.

Her face appeared on every screen.

“I object as a voting shareholder.”

Vanessa’s expression remained smooth.

“Maya, this is not appropriate.”

“Neither was sleeping with his doctor.”

The recording played.

No director spoke while Vanessa’s kiss appeared on screen, followed by the forged signature and her conversation about medication.

Julian stood abruptly.

“This footage is manipulated.”

Maya displayed the device metadata and live verification report.

Then came the slap.

Clara’s face turned sharply beneath Vanessa’s hand. Vanessa planted the bracelet. Julian remained silent.

Marcus, standing behind Adrian, watched the screen.

His posture changed.

When the video ended, Vanessa attempted one final argument.

“An affair does not make Adrian competent.”

“No,” Maya replied. “But poisoning him makes your report unreliable.”

The board suspended the vote and ordered an independent medical examination.

Vanessa rose.

“You cannot suspend me in my own home.”

Adrian looked at Marcus.

“It is my home legally.”

Marcus removed his earpiece.

“Sir, the security contract recognizes the lawful property owner.”

Vanessa’s composure finally fractured.

She turned to Julian.

“Do something.”

He backed away.

Police arrived twenty minutes later. They took statements but did not arrest Vanessa immediately. Her lawyers argued that the medical documents were prepared in good faith and that the bedroom footage had been obtained illegally.

Clara was released.

As officers photographed her cheek, Adrian asked where Julian had gone.

No one knew.

The doctor’s car remained in the garage.

Elena remembered the laundry tunnel leading to the old carriage house.

By the time police reached it, Julian had disappeared.

On the floor lay an empty medication case.

One vial remained.

Its label carried Adrian’s name.

The contents did not.
