The Blue Capsules

Chapter 07 - The Blue Capsules
Independent toxicology tests found a combination of sedatives and a heart medication Adrian had never been prescribed.
In small doses, the mixture caused dizziness, memory gaps, confusion, and fainting. Over time, it could create symptoms resembling neurological disease.
The blue capsules in Adrian’s bathroom contained the same compounds.
Julian had personally dispensed them.
Adrian spent two nights in a hospital while the drugs left his system. His thinking grew clearer, but clarity did not bring comfort.
It showed him how many decisions had been made while he was impaired.
Contracts signed without memory.
Arguments with Maya he recalled only in fragments.
Thomas Bennett’s dismissal.
The transfer of medical authority to Vanessa.
Clara visited with Elena.
She brought Thomas’s maintenance ledger and a photograph of a bank statement found inside its cover.
The statement showed regular payments from a Hawthorne subsidiary to Julian’s consulting company beginning two months before Thomas died.
“Your father knew,” Adrian said.
“He tried to tell you.”
“I accused him.”
“You let Vanessa accuse him.”
The correction mattered.
Adrian looked at Clara.
“I cannot undo that.”
“No.”
“What do you want from me?”
“The truth in public. Not a private settlement.”
Adrian agreed.
Then Maya entered.
She had her mother’s dark hair and Adrian’s habit of tightening one jaw muscle when angry.
Father and daughter looked at each other.
“I should have believed you,” he said.
“You should have investigated.”
“Yes.”
“You made me prove I was sober before you would listen.”
“Yes.”
Maya sat across from him.
“I am helping because Vanessa hurt people with less power than us. Do not turn this into a story about our reconciliation.”
“I won’t.”
It was the first promise she accepted without mocking.
Later, police searched Julian’s office.
They found falsified scans, unsigned death certificates, and a file labeled FINAL EVENT.
Inside was a protocol for a “cardiac emergency” scheduled during the company’s founder’s gala two weeks later.
Adrian would collapse in public.
Julian would declare a fatal arrhythmia.
Vanessa would inherit voting control under Adrian’s revised will.
The signature on the will matched the forged medical documents.

The affair had never been the whole betrayal.
It was the private celebration of a murder still being prepared.
