The Arrest of Adrian Hawthorne

Chapter 12 - The Arrest of Adrian Hawthorne

Victor responded with precision.

He accused Adrian of breaking into corporate property, assaulting security, and stealing confidential documents.

Police arrested Adrian in front of the reporters.

The images spread worldwide: billionaire founder in handcuffs, rain on his gray suit, shattered glass behind him.

Victor called it a tragic consequence of mental decline.

But Adrian smiled as officers placed him in the car.

The memory cards were already with Nora Price.

By morning, the Hawthorne Ledger appeared across multiple news organizations. Federal regulators froze Victor’s accounts. The board scheduled a confidence vote.

Thomas Bennett’s name was cleared publicly.

Clara watched the announcement from Maya’s loft.

Her father’s photograph appeared beside the words WRONGFULLY ACCUSED WHISTLEBLOWER.

She felt relief, anger, and emptiness at the same time.

A corrected headline could not call him back.

Adrian was released on bail because video showed he had not assaulted anyone. His lawyer argued the break-in was justified by imminent destruction of evidence.

When he arrived at the loft, Clara handed him a copy of Thomas’s statement.

“You should read the last page.”

Thomas had written directly to Adrian:

You are not a cruel man. That has become your favorite excuse. Cruel systems do not require cruel men. They require comfortable men who decline to look closely.

Adrian read the sentence twice.

Maya watched him.

“He knew you.”

“Yes.”

Victor Lane disappeared before federal agents reached his office.

Vanessa remained under house arrest at a private apartment. Julian was still missing.

Then Elena received a call from the estate kitchen line.

A frightened young gardener said Victor and Julian had returned to Hawthorne Manor through the service gate. They were carrying fuel containers and boxes from the medical suite.

The founder’s gala was three days away.

The board intended to use the manor for the event despite the scandal.

Victor understood that the building contained more than ledgers.

It contained the bedroom recording system, medication storage, and original trust documents.

If the house burned, he could blame Adrian’s “unstable supporters.”

Vanessa was under guard.

Yet her ankle monitor stopped transmitting at the same moment.

All three partners were returning to the room where the lie had been exposed.

This time, they intended to erase the house around it.
