The Woman Who Came Back for the Bed

Chapter 13 - The Woman Who Came Back for the Bed
Vanessa entered Hawthorne Manor wearing the same blue blouse from the day Clara caught her.
Later, investigators would understand the choice.
She wanted the final images to resemble the first, allowing her lawyers to argue that any recovered footage had been duplicated or manipulated.
Julian dismantled the bedroom clock.
Victor gathered trust documents from the study.
Fuel was poured through the old west corridor, where faulty wiring had already been cited in inspection reports.
Their plan was to ignite a controlled fire, destroy the evidence rooms, and leave before gala staff arrived.
But Vanessa stopped beside the bed.
She ran one hand across the carved wood.
“This is where he looked at me as if I were nothing.”
Julian snapped the clock casing closed.
“He caught us planning his death.”
“He caught us in bed. That is what the world remembers.”
Victor entered.
“The world remembers whatever survives.”
A voice came from the doorway.
“Then you should have checked who else survived the house.”
Elena stood there.
She had returned to remove family photographs from the staff quarters before the gala. Instead, she found the three conspirators.
Victor reached for her.
Elena pulled the fire alarm.
The estate erupted in bells.
Julian caught her arm, but she struck him with the metal alarm handle and ran toward the stairs.
Vanessa shouted for Victor to ignite the corridor immediately.
The fuel caught faster than expected.
Flames traveled along the wall and blocked the main exit.
Outside, Adrian, Maya, Clara, police, and firefighters arrived as smoke rose from the roof.
Elena appeared at a second-floor window.
Clara knew the servant passages better than the rescue teams. She led firefighters through the kitchen tunnel and into the linen stairwell.
They reached Elena first.
In the master bedroom, Vanessa and Julian were trapped behind the canopy bed as smoke filled the ceiling. Victor had already escaped through the garage tunnel, leaving them.
Julian tried to climb from the balcony and fell onto the lower awning, injuring his leg but surviving.
Vanessa remained beside the bed, clutching the forged will.
Clara entered wearing a firefighter’s spare mask.
For one second, the two women faced each other again in the same room.
Vanessa held out her hand.
“Help me.”
Clara remembered the slap.
Then she remembered Thomas’s sentence about cruelty.
She pulled Vanessa toward the exit.

Saving her did not erase the crime.
It prevented Vanessa from escaping judgment through fire.
