Chapter 09 - Vanessa’s First Marriage
Vanessa did not wait quietly for the investigation.
She appeared on television with a bruise painted near her wrist and described Adrian as controlling, jealous, and increasingly dangerous.
She admitted the relationship with Julian but called it “an emotional mistake during years of marital isolation.”
She denied drugging Adrian.
Her lawyer produced photographs of pills Adrian had taken voluntarily and messages in which he complained of memory problems before Julian became his doctor.
Public opinion divided.
Some saw Vanessa as a calculating criminal.
Others saw a younger wife being punished by a powerful husband for infidelity.
Then Nora Price found Vanessa’s first marriage.
At twenty-four, Vanessa had married pharmaceutical investor Malcolm Reed.
Julian Reed was Malcolm’s younger brother.
Malcolm died in a boating accident after changing his will to leave Vanessa control of his research company. The death was ruled accidental. Julian later became executor of the estate.
No public record described Vanessa and Julian as former in-laws because both used different surnames professionally.
They had known each other for sixteen years.
Bank transfers showed they remained financially linked long before Vanessa met Adrian.
Maya confronted Adrian with the evidence.
“You did no background check?”
“Victor Lane introduced her.”
“Her brother.”
“Yes.”
“And you believed the story she gave you.”
“Yes.”
Maya paced the hospital room.
“She did not enter the family through romance. She entered through recruitment.”
Nora uncovered two more wealthy men Vanessa dated between Malcolm’s death and Adrian’s marriage. Both suffered unusual health problems. One recovered after ending the relationship. The other died, leaving a disputed charitable trust managed by Victor Lane.
A pattern emerged.
Vanessa, Julian, and Victor identified isolated wealthy men, gained access through relationships and professional services, then redirected assets using medical incapacity.
Adrian was the largest target.
Clara’s father was the first person inside Hawthorne Global to recognize the pattern.
The affair in the bedroom had not begun during Adrian’s illness.
It had survived every marriage Vanessa used.
Julian was not merely her lover.
