The Board Takes the House

Chapter 10 - The Board Takes the House

Victor Lane controlled six directors on the Hawthorne board.

He called an emergency meeting and argued that Adrian, Vanessa, and Julian were all compromised. For the company’s protection, he proposed transferring temporary authority to himself.

The directors approved by one vote.

Victor became interim chairman.

His first action was to suspend Maya’s system access.

His second was to terminate Clara and Elena.

His third was to claim Hawthorne Manor as a corporate residence and order Adrian’s family to vacate within twenty-four hours.

Adrian stared at the notice.

The estate had belonged to his mother, but years earlier he transferred it into a company trust for tax purposes. Victor was using Adrian’s own efficiency against him.

Clara packed a single suitcase.

Elena stood in the servants’ corridor, looking at the room where she had raised her children while caring for someone else’s house.

Vanessa returned under legal protection to collect personal belongings.

She walked through the foyer with two lawyers and paused before Clara.

“You could have taken the bracelet,” she said quietly. “I would have given you money and a recommendation.”

Clara looked at her.

“You think everyone has a price because you never learned the difference between need and consent.”

Vanessa’s smile vanished.

Adrian entered.

She turned toward him.

“You brought this on yourself. You trusted staff over your wife.”

“No. I trusted my comfort over everyone who warned me.”

The answer gave her nothing to attack.

Before leaving, Elena removed a framed fire-evacuation map from the kitchen wall.

Behind it was a sealed envelope Thomas Bennett had given her before his death.

He told her to open it only if Victor Lane gained control of the estate.

Inside was a key card, a floor plan, and one sentence:

THE REAL HAWTHORNE LEDGER IS UNDER THE ROOM WHERE THEY PRACTICE LYING.

Maya recognized the reference.

Vanessa had converted the old music room into a media studio where executives rehearsed speeches and staged charity videos.

Beneath it was a forgotten records vault from the original company headquarters.

Victor did not know it existed.

They had one night before security changed every access code.

The house had been taken from them.

The evidence remained inside.
