Thomas Bennett’s Last Route

Chapter 08 - Thomas Bennett’s Last Route

Police reopened Thomas Bennett’s death.

His car had left the road on a clear afternoon. The original report found no mechanical fault, but the vehicle was destroyed before Clara could request an independent inspection.

Elena remembered seeing Julian at the estate garage two days before the crash.

He claimed Adrian needed a vehicle safety review.

Security logs from that year had been deleted.

Maya found a backup inside the cloud account of the former surveillance contractor. The footage showed Julian entering the garage with Victor Lane, Hawthorne Global’s chief operating officer.

Victor was Vanessa’s older brother.

Adrian had hired him at her recommendation.

He was also the executive leading the proposed acquisition that would place company assets under a new holding structure controlled by Vanessa after Adrian’s death.

Thomas had discovered the connection.

Clara gave investigators her father’s final voice message.

At the time, it sounded like ordinary advice:

“Check the route before trusting the map. The person who gives directions may own the road.”

Audio experts found background sounds identifying the Hawthorne parking garage. Thomas was recording while following Julian.

A traffic camera showed Thomas’s vehicle leaving the estate behind Victor Lane’s SUV.

Victor claimed coincidence.

Then Nora Price, a financial journalist working with Maya, traced six million dollars supposedly stolen by Thomas. The money never reached an account under his control.

It moved through a shell company registered to Victor.

Vanessa had framed Thomas to discredit the only employee who questioned Adrian’s medicine and the trust transfers.

Clara listened without speaking.

For two years, people had called her father a thief and coward. His university scholarship fund was canceled. His name was removed from the company’s ethics committee.

Adrian offered to restore everything immediately.

Clara shook her head.

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because if you clear him before the evidence is public, people will say a billionaire changed the story to protect his maid.”

The word maid was not shameful when Clara used it. It identified the position from which she had seen what executives missed.

“We wait for the documents,” she said. “Then no one has to trust your guilt or my grief.”

Adrian understood.

Truth that depended on his authority could be reversed by the next powerful person.

Thomas deserved truth that could stand without permission.
