Chapter 15 - Julian’s Bargain
Julian Reed survived the fall with a broken leg and fractured wrist.
From his hospital bed, he requested immunity.
He offered records connecting Vanessa and Victor to three earlier victims, including Vanessa’s first husband Malcolm.
Prosecutors refused full immunity but agreed to consider cooperation.
Julian began talking.
Malcolm Reed had not died in a boating accident. Vanessa sedated him before the trip, and Julian disabled the boat’s emergency transmitter. They expected his death to transfer the pharmaceutical company to Vanessa.
When legal disputes blocked the inheritance, Victor helped create shell trusts to recover the assets.
The three refined their method.
Vanessa formed relationships.
Julian established medical decline.
Victor moved money and controlled investigations.
They targeted Adrian after learning he had no prenuptial agreement strong enough to protect voting shares during incapacity.
Julian admitted altering Adrian’s medication and forging scans. He also admitted tampering with Thomas Bennett’s car.
Victor ordered the collision after Thomas contacted regulators.
Julian followed Thomas from the estate and used a remote diagnostic tool to disable the vehicle’s steering assistance on the mountain curve.
He claimed he did not expect Thomas to die.
Clara listened to the recorded confession in the prosecutor’s office.
Julian’s voice remained clinical even while describing her father’s final minutes.
“Did he say anything?” she asked.
The prosecutor paused the recording.
Julian had.
After the crash, Thomas remained conscious long enough to see Julian approach.
He said, “Clara will finish it.”
Julian laughed at the time because he believed Thomas was delirious.
Clara left the room before anyone could comfort her.
Outside, Adrian waited.
She told him the words.
He did not say her father would be proud. Pride from the dead could become another burden placed on survivors.
Instead, he said, “You finished what he could not. Now you are allowed to choose something else.”
Clara looked through the courthouse windows.
For eighteen months, every decision had been organized around proving Thomas innocent.
Justice created a strange new fear.
Without the fight, she would have to decide who she was.
