The Gold Heel Hit Her Hand—Then the Mansion Camera Revealed Everything

Ashford Manor had been built to impress people before they learned anything about the family inside it.
Three floors of white marble rose beneath a crystal chandelier. A curved staircase divided the great hall like the wings of a palace, and beyond the glass doors an infinity pool reflected the winter night.
In the center of that perfect room, Clara Ashford lay on the floor.
She was seven months pregnant. One hand protected her stomach. The other was spread against the cold marble beneath the gold heel of Veronica Ashford.
Veronica wore a dark burgundy velvet dress and the expression of a woman certain no one would stop her.
“Sign the confession,” she said.
A document lay beside Clara’s face. It stated that Clara had stolen the Ashford family’s sapphire bracelet, forged medical records, and agreed to leave the estate without claiming any part of her unborn child’s inheritance.
“I didn’t steal anything,” Clara whispered.
Veronica shifted more weight onto the stiletto.
Pain shot through Clara’s fingers.
“You entered my mother’s private room.”
“To collect the hospital files Nathan asked me to find.”
“And the bracelet vanished.”
“You put it in my bag.”
Veronica smiled. “Prove it.”
Clara looked toward the ceiling camera. Its red light had been dark for nearly an hour.
Veronica followed her gaze.
“I disabled the system.”
The front doors opened.
Nathan Ashford stepped into the mansion wearing a black suit, his travel bag still in one hand. He had returned from Geneva two days earlier than anyone expected.
The bag fell.
His eyes moved from Clara’s tear-streaked face to the gold shoe crushing her hand.
“Veronica.”
His sister lifted her foot so quickly that the heel clicked against the floor.
“Nathan, thank God. She attacked me.”
He crossed the hall and knelt beside his wife.
Clara curled her injured hand against her chest.
“She planted the bracelet.”
Veronica pointed at Clara. “She’s lying. She has been unstable for weeks. Check the cameras.”
Nathan looked up at the black security dome.
Veronica believed the camera was dead.
She did not know Nathan had installed a second cloud recorder after several mysterious outages.
He took out his phone.

“I will.”
For the first time, Veronica’s face showed fear.
