The family attorney arrived at the hospital before dawn.
Martin Hale had served the Ashfords for thirty years. He carried a sealed envelope bearing Eleanor Ashford’s signature.
Eleanor had amended her will shortly before her death.
Under the original arrangement, Nathan and Veronica each controlled half of Ashford Holdings. Veronica managed the charitable foundation and the mansion trust.
The amendment changed control when Nathan had a child.
Upon the child’s birth, twenty percent of Veronica’s voting authority would move into an independent trust protected by Clara until the child turned twenty-five.
Eleanor had also ordered a complete audit of the foundation.
“Why didn’t we know?” Nathan asked.
“Your mother feared Veronica would retaliate if she learned before the pregnancy was secure.”
“You knew Clara was pregnant.”
Martin lowered his eyes.
“Veronica delivered a medical letter stating that Clara had lost the baby.”
Clara’s face drained of color.
The letter bore the signature of Dr. Stephen Cole, her former obstetrician.
She had never miscarried.
Veronica had used a forged medical report to delay the amendment.
Martin opened Eleanor’s personal note.
Clara has worked beside women who had no powerful name to protect them. She understands that wealth is responsibility, not permission. If my daughter cannot accept oversight, she must not remain in control.
Veronica believed Clara had found the amendment.
The sapphire bracelet was mentioned in a final line:
The second key rests beneath the blue stone.
Detective Ruiz examined the clasp again.
Behind the memory-card compartment was a tiny brass key.
It opened a hidden archive beneath Ashford Manor.
The archive held every original foundation ledger Eleanor had collected before her death.
Veronica had spent two years searching for it.
