Mercer House Opens

Chapter 16 - Mercer House Opens

The west wing reopened as Mercer House.

It contained family apartments, prenatal care, legal services, childcare, and emergency housing.

No resident paid rent.

No donor controlled admission.

The first woman arrived eight months pregnant with one suitcase. Her partner had hidden her identification and threatened to have her declared unstable.

Clara met her in the great hall.

The woman looked at the chandelier and whispered, “I don’t belong somewhere like this.”

Clara answered, “This place was built for you before wealthy people stole its purpose.”

Daniel Mercer’s blueprints hung beside the entrance.

The old guest suites became safe apartments.

The pool where Veronica fell became part of a supervised therapy program.

The camera above the marble remained, but recordings belonged to an independent safety office.

Beneath it, a plaque read:

Evidence must protect people, not power.

The gold stiletto was not displayed.

Clara refused to turn her pain into decoration.

The lesson lived in the rules, the governance, and the doors that could no longer be locked from one private office.
