Four years into her sentence, Veronica wrote to Clara.
She explained that she had spent her life believing Nathan would inherit praise while she performed the difficult work. When Clara’s pregnancy activated the trust amendment, Veronica felt erased.
I saw your child as the final door closing on everything I believed I deserved.
Clara read the letter twice.
The explanation made sense.
It excused nothing.
Veronica asked for photographs of Eleanor.
Clara refused.
The child would not become a reward for prison rehabilitation.
A year later, another letter arrived.
This one asked for nothing.
I understand now that an apology is not a key. It does not open a door the harmed person has chosen to close.
Clara placed it in a file.
She did not answer.
Nathan struggled more.
He remembered the sister who protected him at school and cared for their mother during illness.
Those memories remained true.
