When Eleanor turned seven, she noticed the scar across Clara’s hand.
“What happened?”
Clara explained that someone in the family became angry, tried to frighten her, and hurt her. She said Nathan came home, the camera recorded the truth, and the police helped.
“Was it Aunt Veronica?”
“Yes.”
“Did she hate me?”
“She was afraid of what your birth would change. Her fear was not your fault.”
“Can people love someone and still hurt them?”
“Yes.”
“Then what matters?”
“What they choose to do.”
Eleanor grew up inside Mercer House without believing the mansion belonged to her.
At ten, she asked about the trust carrying her name.
Clara explained that it would provide education, healthcare, and security but no private right to control workers or residents.
“Am I rich?” Eleanor asked.
“You have advantages.”
“Does that make me important?”
“No. You were important before you had anything.”
