Clara removed her wedding ring one evening and left it on the kitchen counter.
Nathan noticed.
He did not ask her to put it back.
For weeks, they lived as co-parents and uncertain partners.
Clara needed to know whether his change would remain after the courtrooms emptied.
Nathan learned to ask before offering solutions.
He stopped treating disagreement as a crisis.
When Clara woke from nightmares with her fingers curled, he did not say the danger had passed.
He waited.
On their fifth anniversary, they sat inside the unfinished west wing while Eleanor slept nearby.
Clara asked, “If you had returned after I signed the confession, would you have believed Veronica?”
Nathan answered honestly.
“At first, yes.”
The truth hurt more than reassurance would have.
It also felt safer.
“I hate that answer,” Clara said.
“So do I.”
She placed the ring back on her finger.
