Chapter 02 - The Recording Above Them
Nathan opened the private security application.
The first clip showed Clara entering the great hall carrying a folder.
Veronica followed from the east wing with the sapphire bracelet hidden in her palm. She waited until Clara set down her handbag, then dropped the jewelry inside.
The second clip showed Veronica summoning the house manager and ordering him to search the bag.
The third showed her dismissing every employee except Clara.
The final clip contained the confession document, the threats, and the moment the gold heel descended.
Nathan stopped the video.
Veronica stared at the phone.
“That isn’t the full context.”
“What context makes this acceptable?”
“She was going to destroy our family.”
Clara struggled to sit up.
Nathan placed one arm behind her shoulders and called an ambulance.
Veronica moved toward the front doors.
Two security guards entered before she reached them.
Nathan had triggered the emergency lock while opening the footage.
“You’re imprisoning me in my own house,” Veronica said.
“This house belongs to a family trust.”
“I manage that trust.”
“Not after tonight.”
Veronica’s anger replaced fear.
She pointed at Clara’s stomach. “That baby changes everything, and she knows it.”
Clara looked at Nathan. “What does she mean?”
Before he could answer, Veronica ran toward the pool corridor. Her gold heel slipped on a shard of decorative glass near the doors. She tried to catch the frame, struck the closed panel, and crashed through it.
The glass shattered outward.
Veronica fell into the illuminated pool.
A guard jumped in and pulled her toward the steps.
Nathan did not move from Clara’s side.
At the hospital, doctors found two fractured fingers and severe bruising across Clara’s palm. The baby’s heartbeat remained stable, but stress had triggered early contractions.
Police recovered the sapphire bracelet from Clara’s handbag.
Beneath its clasp was a narrow compartment.
Inside sat a memory card no one expected.
When Detective Maya Ruiz inserted it into a secure computer, financial ledgers appeared on the screen.
