The Winter Birth

Chapter 12 - The Winter Birth
Six weeks before trial, a snowstorm covered the city.
Clara woke before dawn with severe pain.
At thirty-five weeks, labor had begun early.
Nathan drove until a fallen tree blocked the road. An ambulance reached them through a service route.
At the hospital, the baby’s heart rate dropped.
Clara remembered the false doctor, the sedatives, and the documents prepared to erase her decisions.
She began to panic.
Nathan stayed beside her.
“No one decides anything without you.”
An emergency cesarean became necessary.
Clara signed her own consent.
Their daughter was born at 5:42 a.m.
For three seconds, the room remained silent.
Then the baby cried.
They named her Eleanor Rose Mercer Ashford.
Eleanor for the grandmother whose evidence survived.
Rose for the shelter.
Mercer for Clara’s father.
Ashford as a name they intended to change rather than worship.
The baby spent twelve days in neonatal care.
Nathan slept in a chair nearby and handled legal calls without asking Clara to praise him.
When she requested silence, he gave silence.
When she asked him to stay, he stayed.
