Chapter 13 - The Trial
Veronica’s trial lasted seven weeks.
Clara testified for two days.
Her attorney asked why she hid evidence inside the bracelet instead of immediately calling police.
“Because the lawyers, doctors, security staff, and board members around me all answered to the person I was investigating.”
The defense accused her of seeking control of the family trust.
“My hand was fractured, my daughter was born early, and I learned my father’s death was not an accident. If that is benefit, the word means nothing.”
Nathan testified next.
He admitted ignoring warnings.
“I minimized what Clara told me. That made Veronica’s conduct easier to hide. It did not force Veronica to drug, frame, or assault her.”
Dr. Cole testified under a plea agreement.
Owen Price authenticated the recordings.
Julian Cross was extradited and blamed Veronica for everything.
Then prosecutors played his messages directing the medication plan.
Veronica took the stand against advice.
She described herself as the only child willing to protect the Ashford legacy.
The prosecutor asked what Clara threatened.
“My authority,” Veronica answered.
The jury convicted her of attempted murder, aggravated assault, financial fraud, evidence tampering, and conspiracy connected to Daniel Mercer’s death.
She received thirty-four years in prison.
Julian received twenty-one.
Dr. Cole lost his medical license and received eight.
Clara did not smile.
The sentence did not restore her father or remove the scar across her fingers.
