Chapter 10 - The Birth Trust
The court activated Eleanor’s amendment.
Clara became temporary protector of the unborn child’s inheritance.
She refused personal control.
Instead, she proposed an independent board including shelter residents, employees, doctors, auditors, and community advocates.
Several Ashford relatives objected.
One uncle told Nathan, “You are giving strangers power over what our grandfather built.”
Nathan answered, “Our family used private power to steal from those strangers.”
The court approved the structure.
Recovered funds reopened Rose Haven Shelter and restored unpaid grants.
The west wing renovation began using Daniel Mercer’s original plans.
At home, Clara and Nathan lived separately inside the mansion.
They attended counseling.
Clara explained that the heel was not the only moment she feared.
“The worst part was every time you told me Veronica meant well.”
Nathan did not argue.
“I made your discomfort the price of keeping peace.”
“Yes.”
“I cannot undo that.”
“No.”
The honesty hurt, but it created something apologies alone had not.
Space for reality.
One evening, the baby kicked while Nathan sat across the room.
Clara took his hand and placed it on her stomach.
“This child will inherit resources,” she said, “not the right to silence anyone.”
The trust charter later contained the same sentence.
