Two Rings in the Mud

Chapter 01 - Two Rings in the Mud

Mara Ellis was already on her knees when Victoria Blackwood found her beside the grave.

Cold rain had softened the cemetery earth, staining the white apron over Mara’s navy dress. One hand rested protectively over the small curve of her stomach. The other held two silver rings above the dark mud.

White daisies lay beside the headstone.

RUTH BLACKWOOD

BELOVED DAUGHTER

1991–2023

Victoria stopped three feet away in an ivory coat and diamond earrings, looking less like a grieving mother than the owner of everything the cemetery contained.

“What are you doing here?”

Mara looked up. Her eyes were red from crying.

“I came to keep a promise.”

Victoria saw the larger ring in Mara’s palm.

It had belonged to Ruth.

The inside was engraved with a tiny blackwood leaf, the private symbol used by the family long before the company became a global empire.

Victoria’s face hardened.

“That ring disappeared from my daughter’s effects.”

“Ruth gave it to me.”

“You expect me to believe a housemaid was entrusted with a Blackwood heirloom?”

Mara closed her fingers.

Victoria stepped forward and seized her wrist.

“Give it back.”

“Please. You don’t understand what’s inside it.”

The sentence made Victoria angrier.

She struck Mara across the mouth.

The young woman fell sideways into the mud. The two rings slipped from her fingers and landed beside the daisies. Blood appeared at the corner of her lip.

Victoria looked down without remorse.

“My daughter is dead because people like you saw kindness and mistook it for an invitation.”

Mara pushed herself upright, one arm around her stomach.

“I loved Ruth.”

“You cleaned her rooms.”

“She trusted me when no one else listened.”

Victoria reached for the rings.

Mara caught her hand.

“Don’t touch them.”

The cemetery gates opened behind them.

Three black SUVs entered in formation and stopped along the wet road. Men in dark suits stepped out first.

Then Adrian Blackwood emerged from the center vehicle.

Victoria’s only living son crossed the grass without an umbrella. His black overcoat moved behind him in the wind, and fury sharpened every step.

He saw the blood on Mara’s mouth.

He saw the mud on her apron.

Then he saw his mother standing over her.

“Get away from my wife.”

Victoria froze.

Mara closed her eyes briefly.

For six months, Adrian and Mara had hidden their marriage while they investigated Ruth’s death and protected the evidence concealed inside the ring. The family believed Mara remained a servant at Blackwood Estate.

No one knew she carried Adrian’s child.

Victoria stared at her son.

“Your what?”

Adrian knelt beside Mara and placed one hand behind her shoulders.

“My legal wife.”

He looked at the hand over her abdomen.

“And the mother of my child.”

The security men formed a line near the grave.

Victoria’s anger turned into disbelief.

“You married the woman who stole from your sister?”

Adrian picked Ruth’s ring from the mud.

“She did not steal it.”

Using his thumbnail, he pressed two hidden points beneath the engraved leaf. The ring opened along an invisible seam.

Inside was a wafer-thin memory chip.

Victoria’s face lost its color.

Adrian held it where she could see.

“Ruth placed this inside the ring eleven minutes before the car crash that killed her.”

He picked up the second ring—Mara’s wedding band—and slid it gently back onto her finger.

“The chip contains the accounts she discovered, the threat she recorded, and the name of the person who ordered her driver to take Blackwater Road.”

Victoria looked toward her daughter’s headstone.

For three years, she had accepted that Ruth died in a tragic accident.

For three years, she had allowed her brother Malcolm to control the investigation, the family foundation and the company Ruth intended to reform.

Mara wiped blood from her lip.

“Ruth told me to bring the ring here on the anniversary of her death,” she said. “She arranged for the files to unlock only after it connected to the transmitter beneath the headstone.”

A soft tone sounded from Adrian’s phone.

The upload had begun.

At the cemetery gate, another vehicle arrived.

This one belonged to federal investigators.

Victoria stared at the grave, the ring and the pregnant woman she had just struck.

Ruth’s final secret was no longer buried.
