Chapter 12 - Victoria’s Signature
Victoria discovered her signature on twelve documents she had never read carefully.
They approved security payments, Ruth’s medication plan, the dismissal of clinic auditors and the transfer of crash evidence into Malcolm’s control.
The signatures were genuine.
That made them worse.
Malcolm had not forged everything.
He placed papers among routine estate files and relied on his sister signing whatever protected the family.
Victoria testified before the grand jury.
She admitted ignoring Ruth’s warnings, authorizing surveillance of Mara and publicly calling her daughter unstable. She also admitted approving the employment complaint later used to discredit Mara.
Prosecutors asked whether Malcolm deceived her.
“Yes.”
Whether she remained responsible for her signatures.
“Yes.”
The answer cost Victoria her position.
The Blackwood board removed her as chairwoman. Charity organizations withdrew honors. Reporters surrounded the estate she once ruled.
She did not ask Adrian to defend her.
Instead, she released the documents with written explanations of what she failed to verify.
Some called it courage.
Mara did not.
“Courage would have helped Ruth while she was alive.”
Victoria accepted the correction.
She began meeting families affected by clinic cuts. Many refused to see her. Those who agreed did not offer comfort.
Accountability felt different when the people harmed were not employees required to remain polite.
