The Slap Before the Cameras Arrived

Chapter 06 - The Slap Before the Cameras Arrived
Victoria reached the cemetery early because Malcolm told her Mara had been seen near Ruth’s grave.
He described the visit as an attempted theft.
Security remained near the gates, where they could observe without appearing involved. Malcolm wanted Victoria angry, Mara frightened and the ring exposed before Adrian arrived.
Victoria did exactly what he expected.
She saw a servant holding Ruth’s ring and replaced questions with certainty. The slap, the blood and the accusation became the emotional scene Malcolm needed.
Unknown to Victoria, the cemetery transmitter activated the moment the ring crossed the grave marker’s boundary.
It also activated Ruth’s hidden camera.
The headstone contained a small lens inside the carved blackwood leaf. Ruth installed it while arranging her estate, knowing someone might attempt to seize the ring at the grave.
The camera recorded Victoria grabbing Mara and striking her.
More importantly, it recorded Malcolm’s security chief speaking through a hidden earpiece near the gate.
“Get the ring before Blackwood arrives.”
Federal investigators monitoring Ruth’s scheduled archive heard the command.
Adrian’s SUVs entered minutes later.
He had received an automated message:
RING DETECTED. WITNESS AT RISK.
By the time he crossed the grass, agents were already approaching through the second gate.
Victoria believed Adrian’s arrival transformed a family scandal into public humiliation.
In reality, the evidence operation had begun exactly as Ruth planned.
After Adrian revealed the marriage, Victoria tried to recover authority.
She accused Mara of manipulating Ruth, Thomas and Adrian. She called the pregnancy convenient. She demanded a medical test and insisted the ring belonged to the family trust.
The federal agent in charge, Lena Ortiz, stepped forward.
“The ring is evidence in an active investigation.”
Victoria looked toward Malcolm’s men.
They were being disarmed.
One security officer ran.
Agents stopped him near the cemetery wall. Inside his coat they found a signal jammer, disposable phone and a small metal tool designed to crush the ring’s hidden compartment.
Malcolm had not sent observers.
He had sent a recovery team.
Victoria finally understood that her brother expected violence at her daughter’s grave.

She looked at Mara’s bleeding lip.
The certainty that carried her into the cemetery began to crack.
