Chapter 14 - Adrian Left the Head of the Table
After the trial, directors expected Adrian to become permanent chairman of Blackwood Holdings.
He refused.
He accepted a temporary transition role with strict limits. The family shares moved into a stewardship structure containing employees, clinic representatives, independent experts and one Blackwood family seat elected every four years.
Adrian could be removed.
So could Mara.
Victoria owned wealth but no automatic authority.
Investors called the structure unstable.
Adrian called inherited control the instability that created Malcolm.
Blackwood Medical preserved profitable divisions but placed essential clinics inside a public-benefit trust. Foundation money could no longer fund family events, private security or naming rights without independent approval.
The estate dining room changed too.
Victoria had always occupied the chair beneath the family portrait. At the first reform meeting, Adrian removed the chair from the head of the table.
They formed a circle instead.
Symbolism did not solve governance.
It reminded everyone to notice who had been trained to look upward before speaking.
Mara completed her accounting degree and served one final year as trust steward. Then she stepped down.
Ruth had not named her to create a permanent ruler.
She had named her to open a locked system.
The employee trustees asked her to remain as adviser.
She agreed under a paid contract published with every other compensation record.
No hidden generosity.
