Chapter 16 - Ruth’s Grave Changed
The Blackwood cemetery had always been private.
After the trial, Ruth’s grave became a place where clinic staff, former shelter residents and foundation workers left letters. Security tried to limit visitors.
Victoria stopped them.
She transferred the grave and surrounding garden into a public memorial trust. The hidden camera was removed. Ruth’s final evidence no longer needed secrecy.
The headstone received one additional line:
SHE ASKED WHO WAS NOT BEING HEARD.
Mara returned on the fourth anniversary.
She brought daisies and Ruth Elise, now old enough to walk while holding Adrian’s hand.
The mud had been replaced by a stone path for wheelchair access. A bench faced the grave.
Mara still remembered the slap whenever she approached.
Changing the space did not erase the body’s memory.
Victoria arrived later and remained several yards away until Mara invited her closer.
They placed flowers together.
No dramatic reconciliation occurred.
Victoria spoke about Ruth as a child who collected injured birds. Mara spoke about Ruth hiding chocolate inside foundation files during long audits.
