Malcolm Entered the Boardroom

Chapter 08 - Malcolm Entered the Boardroom

Malcolm called an emergency meeting before federal agents reached Blackwood headquarters.

He told directors Adrian had secretly married a household employee who manipulated Ruth’s final days. He described the cemetery investigation as an attempted hostile takeover supported by forged evidence.

Several directors believed him.

Malcolm had controlled their information for three years.

He presented a medical report declaring Ruth cognitively impaired when she signed the trust amendment. The report came from Dr. Simon Hale, the physician who adjusted her heart medication.

He also produced an employment complaint accusing Mara of stealing jewelry and accessing private files.

Victoria had signed it months earlier without reading the attachments.

Adrian entered with Agent Ortiz and the independent trust attorney.

Mara joined by secure video from the hospital, where doctors examined her after the fall. The baby was unharmed.

Malcolm objected to her presence.

“She is not a director.”

The attorney opened Ruth’s amendment.

“She is now a temporary voting steward.”

The employee representative was Elena Ruiz, director of a rural maternity clinic Malcolm planned to close.

The three trustees suspended Malcolm by majority vote.

He laughed.

Then Ortiz displayed the cemetery recording and the metal tool taken from his security officer.

Malcolm denied issuing the order. He claimed the chief acted independently to protect family property.

The chief had already requested immunity.

His statement connected Malcolm to the crash cover-up, medication changes and the attempt to destroy the ring.

Board members began distancing themselves.

One asked why foundation audits had never been independent.

Another asked about consulting payments.

Malcolm’s calm weakened.

He turned to Victoria.

“You know what Ruth was like. Suspicious. Dramatic. Easily influenced.”

Victoria looked at the medical report carrying her signature of approval.

For years, she had repeated those words.

Now she heard them as the structure of the crime.

“My daughter was right,” she said.

Malcolm stared at her.

Victoria removed her chairwoman’s pin and placed it on the table.

“And I helped you make her sound wrong.”

That admission ended his last expectation of family protection.
