The Driver Who Remembered Rain

Chapter 04 - The Driver Who Remembered Rain

Ruth’s driver, Thomas Bell, spent six months in rehabilitation.

Malcolm paid every medical bill and placed guards outside his room. The arrangement appeared generous until Adrian learned Thomas’s wife could visit only with foundation approval.

Adrian and Mara reached him through Grace Hospital’s laundry corridor.

Thomas remembered rain.

He remembered Ruth arguing on the phone and asking him to take the highway instead of Blackwater Road. A message then appeared on the vehicle’s navigation screen ordering an immediate route change because of flooding.

The order carried the security code of Malcolm’s office.

Thomas followed it.

A black SUV appeared behind them near the old quarry. It stayed close enough to prevent him from slowing. When he tried the brakes, the pedal lost pressure.

Ruth removed the silver ring from her finger.

She opened it with a hairpin, inserted a memory chip and closed the seam.

“Give this to Mara if I cannot,” she told him.

The car struck the barrier.

Thomas woke upside down. Ruth was still conscious.

A man opened the rear door and took her phone.

Thomas could not see his face, but he recognized the Blackwood security pin on the man’s coat.

He heard Ruth say, “Tell Malcolm the files are already gone.”

The man answered, “That is why he sent us.”

Thomas lost consciousness again.

When he woke in the hospital, Malcolm sat beside him.

He said shock created false memories and warned that blaming the family could end medical support for Thomas’s wife.

Thomas remained silent.

“What happened to the ring?” Adrian asked.

Thomas looked at Mara.

“I placed it in her coat during the funeral viewing.”

Mara finally removed it from beneath her uniform.

Adrian’s anger returned.

“You had this the entire time?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you open it?”

“Ruth encrypted the chip. It needs the transmitter beneath her grave and a biometric confirmation from you.”

Adrian stared at his sister’s ring.

Ruth had designed the evidence so neither Mara nor Adrian could control it alone.

Mara carried the object.

Adrian carried the family authorization.
