At the crash site, Thomas remembered a second detail. The man wore a security ring engraved with the initials BV.
Blackwood Vanguard was Malcolm’s private security company.
Vehicle records showed one Vanguard SUV near the road that night. It was later reported stolen and destroyed.
The driver, Cole Mercer, had disappeared overseas.
Federal agents found him working under another name at a resort in Belize. He accepted extradition after prosecutors showed him the cemetery chief’s cooperation agreement.
Cole admitted following Ruth’s vehicle and remotely activating a device connected to the brake system.
He claimed Malcolm wanted a minor collision that would discredit Ruth and delay the regulator meeting.
The road, rain and speed made death likely.
Cole also admitted taking Ruth’s phone and delaying the emergency call.
He saw Ruth alive.
He left her.
Thomas listened to the confession from another room.
For years, Malcolm’s lawyers suggested Thomas caused the crash through careless driving. The surviving driver carried guilt while the men responsible received bonuses.
The official report was withdrawn.
Thomas’s license and professional record were restored.
He declined a Blackwood settlement until the company agreed to fund independent legal support for drivers pressured to accept unsafe security modifications.
