Chapter 02 - The Maid Ruth Chose
Mara arrived at Blackwood Estate four years earlier with one suitcase and a reference from a nursing home that had closed.
Her official title was junior housekeeper.
In reality, Ruth Blackwood hired her as a private companion after a chronic heart condition made long days at the family foundation difficult. Ruth hated nurses who spoke to her through other people and assistants who treated privacy like a negotiable luxury.
Mara did neither.
She learned which tea reduced Ruth’s nausea, which meetings exhausted her and which family members entered a room only when cameras were present.
Adrian lived mostly overseas, managing Blackwood Medical’s European division. Victoria chaired the family trust. Malcolm Vale—Victoria’s younger brother—controlled finance, security and the Blackwood Foundation.
Ruth was supposed to inherit the foundation.
She wanted to redirect money from luxury charity galas into rural maternity clinics and shelters for abused women. Malcolm called the plan sentimental and financially irresponsible.
Mara watched arguments grow sharper.
Ruth began asking her to photograph ledgers before they vanished from the estate office. Donations intended for clinics had been transferred into consulting companies connected to Malcolm.
When Ruth confronted Victoria, her mother refused to believe it.
“Malcolm has protected this family since your father died.”
“He has protected the appearance of it,” Ruth answered.
Victoria accused Mara of encouraging suspicion.
From that day, staff treated the housekeeper as dangerous.
Only Ruth knew Mara had studied accounting for two years before leaving college to care for her sick mother. She understood enough to recognize shell companies, duplicate invoices and false grant reports.
Together, they built a secret archive.
Ruth chose Mara because everyone powerful in the house looked through her.
“The person they refuse to see is sometimes the safest witness,” Ruth said.
Mara did not feel safe.
Security searched her room twice. Her phone disappeared for a day and returned with a new monitoring application. Malcolm suggested she accept severance and leave the state.
Ruth refused to let her go.
Three weeks before the crash, she gave Mara the silver ring.
“If I ask for it back, make sure I am alone,” Ruth said. “If anyone else asks, tell them you never saw it.”
“What is inside?”
“Proof that my family’s kindness has been financing cruelty.”
