Chapter 18 - Victoria Visited the Shelter
Victoria began volunteering at a domestic-violence shelter funded by the restored foundation.
The director refused to let her work directly with residents at first. Public attention could threaten privacy.
Victoria sorted supplies in a basement.
The task was ordinary and unseen.
She learned that several women had once been denied beds after Malcolm redirected funds. One slept in a car with two children. Another returned to a dangerous home.
No apology could reverse those nights.
Victoria asked the director what useful repair looked like.
“Money without control. Work without praise. Listening without demanding a lesson about yourself.”
Victoria followed the instruction imperfectly.
She still spoke too quickly. She still expected efficiency where trust required time. Staff corrected her.
She returned.
Years later, the shelter offered her a board seat.
She declined.
“I am still learning how not to mistake access for qualification.”
