The Marriage No One Was Allowed to See

Chapter 05 - The Marriage No One Was Allowed to See
Adrian and Mara began working together in secret.
Their first months contained little romance.
They argued about risk, privilege and the speed of the investigation. Adrian wanted to confront Malcolm immediately. Mara insisted that accusation without protected evidence would only make her disappear.
She had less protection than he did.
Malcolm could call Adrian emotional.
He could call Mara a thief.
The difference mattered.
Adrian started noticing how the household treated her. Guests left glasses in her hand without looking at her face. Victoria discussed Mara’s supposed ambition while Mara stood close enough to hear.
Ruth had used invisibility as protection.
It had also wounded the person carrying the evidence.
Adrian moved Mara from household service into the foundation audit team under a false administrative title. Victoria objected. Malcolm requested background checks and accused Mara of exploiting Ruth’s death.
The pressure drew them closer.
Mara knew Ruth’s private hopes. Adrian knew her childhood. Together, they reconstructed the sister neither had known completely.
They married quietly at a small courthouse in Vermont.
Only Thomas Bell, the trust attorney and one investigator attended.
Adrian wanted to announce it.
Mara refused until the evidence was secure.
“If your family learns we are married, Malcolm will say every file exists because I wanted your money.”
“He will say that anyway.”
“Then do not hand him the timing.”
The marriage remained hidden.
At Blackwood Estate, Mara returned temporarily to her old uniform because Malcolm monitored foundation staff more closely than household workers. The disguise humiliated Adrian.
Mara treated it as strategy.
Then she learned she was pregnant.
Adrian wanted her removed from the estate immediately. Mara agreed to relocate after Ruth’s death anniversary, when the ring could be activated at the grave.
Victoria discovered the pregnancy before she learned about the marriage.
She assumed Malcolm’s favorite explanation: Mara had seduced Adrian and was preparing an inheritance claim.
The cemetery confrontation became inevitable.
