Chapter 13 - Malcolm’s Trial
Malcolm Vale was charged with murder conspiracy, financial fraud, obstruction, witness intimidation and theft from charitable funds.
The trial lasted ten weeks.
Prosecutors presented Ruth’s recording, the ring chip, Thomas’s testimony, Cole’s confession and the financial trail. Dr. Hale testified under a plea agreement that Malcolm ordered medication changes to make Ruth appear impaired.
The defense attacked Mara.
They called her an ambitious employee who gained a wealthy husband, a trust seat and public sympathy after Ruth’s death.
Mara answered every question calmly until the lawyer suggested she planted the ring.
Adrian’s hand tightened on the courtroom bench.
Mara looked toward Ruth’s mother.
Victoria stood as a prosecution witness the next day.
She identified the ring, her signatures and Malcolm’s repeated lies. She told the jury that Mara had been truthful at the grave while Victoria chose violence.
Malcolm stared at his sister as though betrayal belonged only to him.
He testified in his own defense.
He claimed the foundation would have collapsed under Ruth’s reforms. He said the crash operation was intended to frighten her, not kill her, and blamed Cole for reckless execution.
The prosecutor asked why emergency help was delayed.
Malcolm said panic.
Why Ruth’s phone was taken.
Security.
Why the ring recovery team carried a crushing tool.
Family property.
Every answer translated human harm into management language.
The jury convicted him on all major counts.
He received life imprisonment plus restitution orders.
Cole, Dr. Hale and several security officers received separate sentences.
The verdict did not make the cemetery scene less painful.
