Chapter 03 - Adrian Returned to a Silent House
Adrian returned from London two days after Ruth’s funeral.
Victoria met him in the marble foyer. Malcolm stood beside her with the official crash report and the expression of a man already managing the next crisis.
Ruth’s car had left the road during heavy rain. Her driver survived with serious injuries but remembered nothing. Investigators found no mechanical defect and no evidence of another vehicle.
Adrian asked where Ruth’s phone was.
Malcolm said it had burned.
Where were her personal files?
Destroyed by water damage.
Who authorized the burial before Adrian arrived?
Victoria said delay would have been cruel.
The house felt wrong.
Ruth’s office had been cleared. Several staff members had been dismissed. Mara continued working, but security never left her alone with Adrian.
When he finally found her in the pantry, she looked frightened rather than grieving.
“Your sister did not trust the crash investigation,” Mara whispered.
Before she could continue, Malcolm’s security chief entered.
Mara immediately changed the subject.
Adrian began watching.
He noticed Malcolm signing foundation transfers Ruth had opposed. Victoria accepted every explanation. The board appointed Malcolm temporary foundation chair before the memorial flowers faded.
Mara avoided Adrian for weeks.
Then he found a folded receipt inside one of Ruth’s books. It listed a private storage unit under Mara’s name and carried one handwritten sentence:
My brother will know what questions to ask after he stops believing the first answer.
Adrian went to the storage unit alone.
Inside were copied ledgers, photographs of false invoices and a recording of Ruth confronting Malcolm about missing clinic funds.
Mara appeared ten minutes later.
She had received an automatic alert when the door opened.
Adrian accused her of withholding evidence.
She answered, “I was waiting to know whether you wanted the truth or only a cleaner version of your sister’s death.”
The question angered him because he did not know the answer.
For most of his life, Adrian had avoided family conflict by working elsewhere. Ruth remained at the estate and fought battles he called unnecessary.
Now she was dead, and the people who dismissed her controlled the story.
Adrian asked Mara to show him everything.
She showed him the copies.
She did not show him the ring.
